Museum of Champagne Wine and Regional Archaeology
Located on Avenue de Champagne, one of Epernay’s most prestigious thoroughfares, the Musée du Vin de Champagne et d’Archéologie Régionale tells thestory of the Champagne region, from the formation of its soil millions of years ago to the present day. It brings together collections of international stature in a modern, interactive scenography adapted to all audiences (tactile tables, virtual reality headsets, digital models, aroma table).
The tour begins with the geological and paleontological history of the region. It continues with the history of human settlement in Champagne, illustrated by a rich selection of regional archaeological finds, taking visitors from Neolithic burials to goldsmiths of Merovingian society, via exceptional Celtic finery and Gallo-Roman pottery. The tour then turns to Champagne wine, a regional heritage and flagship of the French economy. Through a dozen rooms, visitors discover an extensive wine collection tracing the evolution of production and consumption patterns for this iconic beverage.
The tour ends with a tribute to local personalities, collectors from the 19th century and the Belle Epoque, who bequeathed paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and ethnographic curiosities from all over the world to the museum.
