Portail Saint-Martin
Why go there?
The Portail Saint-Martin was built in 1540. It is attributed to the Reims sculptor Pierre Jacques. The Portal originally closed the aisle of the Saint-Martin church. In Renaissance style, the portal is one of the oldest monuments in Epernay.
Classified as a historical monument in 1908, the portal was kept after the demolition of the church and was reinstalled in the square located near Place Hugues-Plomb.
You can admire stone garlands between which play Cupids, Hercules, and all kinds of animals, including salamanders (an architectural detail that links this graceful portal to the time of François I).
