MONTMIRAIL, A CITY FULL OF HISTORY
In the heart of the Brie Champenoise, Montmirail is a commune of nearly 4000 inhabitants. Overlooking the Petit Morin valley, from a formerly fortified promontory, the town is coiled around its 16th century castle.
Inhabited long before the Gallic period, the city preserves the imprints of different eras; the Historical Circuit will make you discover them. The castle of Montmirail was bought in 1678 by Louvois, minister of Louis XIV, who had it restored in 1682. André Le Nôtre designed a part of the park for the visit of the Sun King.
A jewel of Napoleon’s military genius, the battle of Montmirail-Marchais-en-Brie was won by the “Marie-Louise” and the Old Guard on February 11, 1814, over the coalised allies.
Near the site, on the border of the Marne and Aisne departments, in the direction of Paris, the commemorative column and the stele of the Saint-Cyriens recall this victory.
