Eglise Saint-Pierre Saint-paul

Why go there?

Thanks to the merchant Paul Chandon de Briailles, a church that could accommodate enough Sparnaciens was inaugurated in 1897. To pay homage to him, and to refer to the name of the donor, the church was baptized "Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul".

At the end of the 19th century, the Notre-Dame church being too cramped, the parishioners of Epernay addressed a petition to the bishop of Châlons to obtain the creation of a second parish. There were then 18,000 Catholics out of a population of 18,360.

The construction of a chapel and a presbytery was started in 1893 and baptized Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul to thank the donor and merchant Paul Chandon de Briailles who undertook with his two sons to furnish it, to ensure its maintenance costs as well as those of the chaplain.

The architect Edouard Deperthes designed the plans for the church, work on which began on May 12, 1895. But the work proved difficult and 70 wells had to be dug to suck up the water and dry the ground. Ill, Count Paul Chandon de Braille died a month later and therefore did not see "his" church completed.

After two years of construction, Mgr Latty, Bishop of Châlons, blesses the 4 bells. The inauguration of the church took place on July 4, 1897 in the presence of famous artists and musical societies. A rosette is installed. Raoul Chandon, the son of Paul Chandon, donated a stained glass window dedicated to Saint-Vincent, the patron saint of winegrowers. He also offers a large sum for the creation of a square located near the church.

Essential elements of the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church:

The Cavaillé-Coll and Charles Muttin organs. They are listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments.

The stained glass windows by the artistic society of painting on glass in Paris retrace the history of Champagne from the baptism of Clovis to the coronation of Charles VII, passing by the Holy Cross.
